TED-Ed – “Just How Small is an Atom?”

This animated video attempts to explain just how small atoms are. Science!

Undoubtedly, you learned about atoms as a child. They’re tiny little building blocks made up of electrons, protons, and neutrons. But just how tiny are they? Watch the video.

People know they are small, really small, but I still don’t think the average person has a grasp on how small. The TED-Ed video does a good job at giving perspective to the relative size of atoms. That said, it’s still hard to visualize the number 6.2 billion.

The video also covers the density of atoms and the fascinating fact that a significant amount of an atom is empty space.

What do you think of the video?

I needed this when I was in 6th grade. I had a hard time understanding atoms because I just didn’t get how small they were and how many of them it took to make up a strand of hair or how they stuck together.
